eScan Review

eScan offers solid protection from a number of computer threats including viruses, rootkits, spyware, and other malware. The software is effective at not only detecting and removing existing threats, but also protecting your system from new threats. Interestingly enough, this is one of the few systems that have actually gone to the trouble of developing their own firewall; most programs which claim to have this actually are relying on the ‘stock’ windows firewall, which may be potentially ineffective. It even detects malware that is spread through email by scanning all incoming and outgoing files.

Features and Highlights

eScan offers two versions of their home anti-virus programs. The more basic of the two, anti-virus edition, offers effective protection for a good number of users. This includes being able to intelligently monitor new files and classify them as potentially harmful, real-time anti-virus and email scanning, spyware detection and removal, adware, keylogger and rootkit blocking. It even offers users some really advanced features such as ODS scanning with cache technology, registry monitoring, and backing up your system before disinfection, just to ensure that if something does go wrong you will not lose access.

The more advanced option is their Internet Security Suite. The software has been tested by a number of unbiased outside agencies, with results generally being a bit higher than average. Many users will also enjoy the facts that, for the most part, these programs run quietly in the background. Go about your business and you will barely notice it is here. The gamer mode actually prevents full-screen programs from slowing down or being delayed. Users will also enjoy the available history reports, the web based registration and activation process, and even the ability to obtain help right from their online site.

Internet Security Suite

The more advanced anti-virus program is their internet security suite. This offers everything included in the basic program and then some. For example, users will enjoy an advanced firewall that actually scans all incoming and outgoing traffic. There are also password protected settings, which can effectively double as a type of parental controls. Really, all of this is highly customized. You are able to block websites which contain certain words, types of applications (web applets, cookies, and scripts), even multi-media and applications. Block pop-ups and maintain your browser security and privacy options.

Pricing Concerns

Both versions are quite affordable. The basic anti-virus program begins at just $22.45 for a single computer for a full year. Even considering the fact that it will cost $37.45 to cover 3 computers (and just $52.45 for 5 PC’s), this is very cheap insurance. Even the internet security suite is a very reasonable $49.95 to cover 3 computers for a full year. These prices are solidly on the low end of average for the industry. Of course, it is also helpful to consider not only the cost, but what you receive for your investment. In this, that means solid protection and assurances of not losing any sensitive data.

Customer Support

Unlike many other anti-virus companies, eScan does offer their subscribers a number of helpful and useful support options. For starters the site has a very nice frequently asked questions and knowledge base section. They even have a user forum which includes some very knowledgeable help. Or, feel free to contact the company via email or telephone. Live chat is also available, and so is personalized remote support which can be used to address any specific issues related to viruses.

Ease of Use

This is one of the easier anti-virus programs to use. The interface is pretty much intuitive, making for a very nice experience. All the buttons and links are clearly labeled. However, once the software is downloaded and installed (essentially a one-click process) it runs in the background, simply doing its thing while you go about your business. Of course, you can always perform manual scans and make changes or adjustments to your settings.

Bottom Line

eScan offers a decent product line which can be of significant help to a wide variety of users. They are both priced very affordably and give a lot of value.
