All too often, Apple customers buy into the myth that Macs don’t get malware – and few AV companies provide the same level of security for Mac as they do for PCs. While they’re not the most competitively priced solutions on the market, Intego’s security packages plug that gap with a powerful, comprehensive suite of antivirus, anti-malware and anti-phishing tools that give great all-round protection. The real niche, though, is the excellent online privacy tools and parental controls.
Intego offers four options:
Mac Internet Security X9 (starts at $49.99 for one year on one computer). This provides antivirus protection against OS X and Windows malware, firewall network protection, anti-phishing, and real-time scans.
Content Barrier Secure X9 ($79.99), a suite of parental controls designed to block dangerous content. It provides anti-predator chat monitoring alongside antivirus, anti-phishing and anti-spyware, and also allows parents to monitor their children’s internet use and set limits on time spent online.
Washing Machine Secure X9 ($64.99), for scanning and cleaning up your Mac, removing duplicate or unnecessary files and helping you to organize and access important folders and documents more efficiently. This package also comes with antivirus, anti-phishing and anti-spyware tools, as well as firewall network protection.
The Mac Premium Bundle ($89.99), which combines all of the above and throws in personal backup software to boot.
Intego specializes in products for Apple devices and this is reflected in the clean, minimalist, user-friendly design of its dashboard. Installation is straightforward and the app is simple to navigate, allowing you to choose between real-time and scheduled scanning, and between a display showing a brief overview of threats or a detailed log explaining why this item has raised a red flag.
One of the best things about Intego is that it doesn’t slow your Mac down. You can run real-time scans with minimal impact on your computer’s performance, meaning that you don’t have to choose between staying secure and getting stuff done.
While some users complain that it lacks a web scan tool for malicious URLs, when it comes to blocking on-demand and on-access malware, Intego routinely proves itself to be one of the most powerful options of the market, scoring over 98% in independent tests – blowing much of its competition out of the water.
Unfortunately, customer support is not Intego’s strong suit. If you can’t find the answer to your question on the website or in the consumer-led community forums, you need to submit a request via an online form.
The tech team can get back to you in either English or French, which is a plus – but there’s no clear information on how long this will take or what hours they work. With no phone support available, if you have an urgent or complicated issue to resolve, this could get very frustrating, very fast.
Intego’s “bundle” option provides an impressive array of features and high-level performance, but it’s certainly not cheap. Coverage for two or three Mac computers will set you back $334.99 for just two years. Since it’s Mac-only, if you also need protection for PC or mobile devices – even Apple ones – you’ll have to splash out separately. Note, too, that Intego do not offer a money-back guarantee.
That said, it’s not easy to track down an internet security suite that provides water-tight malware protection for Macs, and Intego’s offering does the job extremely well. If peace of mind trumps a tight budget, this is the AV package for you.
As specialists in the Mac security arena, Intego can be truly relied upon to keep your computer safe. It does have its cons – for the price tag, we’d expect 24/7 support, for example. But it’s unobtrusive and easy to use, weeding out threats without slowing you down.
What’s more, Intego’s parental control suite deserves a special mention as the most comprehensive we’ve seen. If you’re looking for reliable ways to keep your kids safe online, or to prevent them turning into mini web-junkies, it’s a very sound investment indeed.
